Shiretoko Peninsula is located in the eastern part of Hokkaido. It is shaped like an arrowhead pointing towards the northeast. In the northern half of the centerline of the peninsula is Shari Town, and in the southern half is Rausu Town. The biggest characteristic of Shiretoko Peninsula is the natural environment, as symbolized by the fact that it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Drift ice brings a vast amount of plankton, which melt into the seawater and results in many kinds of fish growing proliferously. This is also a favorable condition for birds and land-dwelling creatures that eat fish. Thus, the productivity of the ecological chain is high in the area. It is also a precious area inhabited by many endangered animals.
There are many trekking paths, including Lake Rausu surrounded by deep virgin forests, Bokyo No Mori, where you can have a birds-eye view of Nemuro Strait, and the clear Kumagoe No Taki waterfall. There are also various activities to fully enjoy the abundant nature, such as scuba diving, whale watching from sightseeing vessels, and fishing. There is also delicious seafood for each season and hot springs in romantic settings. It is a place worth visiting.
